Canadiana is trying to digitise all Canadian journals published prior to 1921 and all Canadiana content is now freely available. A link has been created for any titles that have been digitised (in full or in part) by Canadiana

Information and links have also been added about other free e-versions if these are almost complete and appear to have stable URLs.

DOMINION MEDICAL JOURNAL
v.1 - v.2:12, Toronto, Robertson and Cook, September 1868 - August 1870.
Monthly.
Editors:   Vol. 1: Llewellyn Brock
Vol. 2: Brock, Uzziel Ogden  and J. Widmer Rolph
Brock's journal filled a void for the growing medical profession in Ontario. As the Editor commented in his introductory Editorial, "A medical journal has long been a desideratum, and its absence something of an opprobrium to the profession of Upper Canada" (Vol. 1 p12). The journal arrived at a time of turbulence in Toronto, where Confederation certainly had been no panacea for professional struggles. Brock expressed the hope that this journal might help "... put an end to those petty rivalries and jealousies, discreditable to members of a learned and humane profession, and the subject of frequent and deserved lay censure and ridicule".

FAMILY DENTIST

Gullett reports, pp. 47-48, "In 1854, there had been a few issues of a publication entitled THE FAMILY DENTIST edited by S.S. Blodgett of Brockville, Ontario..." The publication apparently contained mainly advertisements.
No record of this title, other than the note in Gullett, and no copies of this publication have (2008 and 2020) been located. a Samuel Spencer Blodgett (DDS) practiced in Ogdensburg NY from about 1846 and also practiced in Brockville. According to David J. Steward ("Early history of anesthesia in Canada": Canad. Anaesth. Soc. J., vol. 24, no. 2, March 1977/) Blodgett was a pioneer of anesthesia in Canada; he died in 1849. However, his brother (??) Simeon Sanford Blodgett was also a dentist in Ogdensburg so if this publication, which was probably a Canadian 'edition' of an American publication, actually exists it may have been edited by him.

GAZETTE MEDICALE DE MONTREAL (1887)
Revue mensuelle de Médecine, de Chirurgie et des Sciences Accessoires.
v.1 - v.6, Montréal, February 1887 - December 1892.
Errors in numbering: v. 6, no 11-12 numbered as v. 7, no 11 and v. 8, no 12.
Direction: Anselme Honoré Paquet, William H. Hingston and L. Edouard Desjardins
Dr. William Hingston was one of Canada's most illustrious surgeons in the second half of the 19th century. He was on the staff at the Hôpital de l'Hôtel Dieu in Montreal for over 50 years, and was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1895. Curiously, since he was suspicious of aseptic technique, he was an active campaigner for public health and helped to push through both sanitation laws and vaccination programs. He was a founder of the Citizen's Public Health Association of Montreal (See notes under Public Health Magazine and Literary Review). He was the mayor of Montreal (1875-77).
Saucier, 1936, p.1042.

It is unclear if there were any issues published between December 1871 and late 1876 nor any after July 1877.  (The Osler Library at McGill University has New Series v.2, no.9 (May 1877) - v.2, no.11 (July 1877), which were published in Toronto.

Il s'adresse a tous, mais particulièrement aux membres du clergé, aux instituteurs, aux membres du corps médical.... " Union Médicale du Canada, 1874, v.3, p. 572. This, Canada's only English-language medical-historical periodical during these years, reflected the tireless efforts and the lucid, charming writing style of the Editor: [See: Earle P. Scarlett, In Sickness and in Health: reflections on the Medical Profession. Toronto, McClelland and Stewart, 1972] and of many colleagues, especially Dr. O. D. Stanley. The Historical Bulletin is an invaluable source of information about early medicine in western Canada, although the articles are by no means limited to that area.

HOSPITAL AND NURSING JOURNAL
Winnipeg,  1933 - 1957?
"Published in the interest of the graduate nurse".
This title appears to have been published annually from 1933 to 1957 - with some gaps? It was published by Harriet J. Graham RN but edited by others including Alonza J. Turtle, who died in 1938/9 and Pamela Fry.  Ms Graham (née Barber) was an 1889 graduate of the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing and she presented a set of this comparatively rare title to the US National Library of Medicine. The objectives of the journal, which are set out in the 1933 volume, are to better serve nurses in the western provinces "who desire some medium through which they could express their opinions regarding the various phases of their occupation. Who have experiences and knowledge that might prove of interest and incalculable service to their fellow nurses..." The publication appears to have been supported by advertising, mainly from Winnipeg companies, and includes nursing news from other parts of Canada and overseas. The volume for 1933 was called the City Hospitals and Nursing Journal and that for 1936 is called the Hospitals and Nursing Journal.
