CANADA HEALTH JOURNAL
A Monthly Magazine of Hygiene, and Mental and Physical Culture.
v.1:1-5, London ON, J. Cameron, January - May 1870.
Editor: Clarence T. Campbell
"It will be devoted to the exposition of the laws of hygiene; to the popularizing of the true principles
of health-telling the people how to avoid disease-how to prolong life. It is generally conceded that
more light on these subjects is required. The value of health all acknowledge; and when disease
attacks the frame every effort is made to overcome it. But the majority are heedless of the fact,
so oft repeated, that prevention is better than cure; and while they anxiously seek for health when
lost, take little care to preserve it when found. A knowledge of these simple laws of hygiene that teach
a person 'how not to be sick' is needed by people of all classes and ages. This knowledge our pages
will endeavour to supply. "Our scope is large-embracing not only the interests of the weak and diseased
who are seeking health, but of the strong and vigorous who wish to retain it. All subjects connected
with the proper development of the race will find a place in our columns; but care will be taken to
exclude all distracting hobbies and 'isms.' The Journal is published in the interests of no medical
clique; but for the benefit of the public at large."

CANADA HEALTH JOURNAL (1890)
v.12:1 - v.13:12, Ottawa/Toronto, January 1890 - December 1891
Editor: Edward Playter
This appears to be the last title in a series of journals edited by Edward Playter that started
with the Sanitary Journal in 1874. In the last issue Playter notes that this series has been published for seventeen and a half years ("continuously with the exception of two brief suspensions") and he notes that he now proposes to start issuing a semi-monthly journal but no signs of it have been found.

CANADA JOURNAL OF DENTAL SCIENCE
v.1 - v.4, Montreal, Hamilton ON, June 1868 - August 1879.
Publication suspended June 1872 - July 1877. Issue for Aug. 1878 incorrectly dated Aug. 1879.
Though preceded by the Family Dentist and the Journal of the Times, according to Gullett, pp 48-49,
this is the first real dental publication in Canada. "In reality, Beers' was the first real dental journal in
Canada. He was a splendid reporter and it is from this source that most of the historical information
is to be obtained for the period. Potential subscribers were few in number, however, and financial
difficulties soon arose. The Journal was first published in Montreal, beginning in June 1868, then in
Hamilton, where C.S. Chittenden acted as assistant editor for a period, and finally moved back to
Montreal. The Journal appeared monthly until October 1871, but the last issue of Volume 3 did not
appear until May 1872. Only four issues of Volume 4 appeared and these were widely separated,
the last being in August 1879. Beers (1843-1900) later founded and edited the Dominion Dental
Journal.
As noted in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography "After being educated in Montreal at Philips School and Lower Canada College, in November 1856 William George Beers was apprenticed for four years to Charles M. Dickinson, a dentist in the city. This training soon placed him in the front rank of dentists in the Canadas, and by the early 1860s he was publishing articles in American dental journals. One of the first proponents of dental schools and of legislation to establish the dental profession, he was a driving spirit behind the founding in 1868 of the Dental Association of the Province of Quebec, of which he was named secretary and later president. That year, with his own money, he founded the Canada Journal of Dental Science (Montreal); it ran into financial difficulties from 1871 and finally expired in 1879 after draining all of Beers’s resources." Beers was also interested in lacrosse and the DCB notes "On 26 Sept. 1867, largely through Beers’s efforts, the National Lacrosse Association was formed in Kingston, Ont., by the representatives of 29 clubs from Quebec and Ontario, and it adopted his rules. Two years later he published Lacrosse, the national game of Canada, in which he outlined the historical background of the game, repeated its rules, and reflected on the theory and strategy of play in the various positions.

CANADA LANCET
v.1 - v.2:10, (Also called Nos. 1-22), Montreal, March 14, 1863 - December 15, 1864.
Monthly.
Editor: William Edward Bowman.
Bowman's small journal (eight octavo pages per issue) illustrates many of the problems confronting
Canadian medical journalism in the mid-19th century. Only 236 subscribers purchased volume 1 and
only 178 bought volume 2; moreover, besides the Editor, few physicians wrote for the journal.
Bowman himself laboured diligently and produced about half of the entire contents of his
journal - eighty of the 176 pages. The pattern of his writing permits us some insight into
Bowman's struggle: he wrote sixty per cent of the material in the first seven issues. He not
only was more prolific when he was relatively fresh, he also was more original; in the early
issues, original articles and substantive Editorials by Bowman are relatively common, but
in the last few issues he is filling space with lengthy "reviews" that extract at length from
recently published books. Of the final six issues, only one contains an Editorial. Bowman
was sharply critical of McGill College and of the Montreal General Hospital - the
English-speaking medical establishment in Montreal - and this probably contributed
to his failure to obtain sufficient numbers of contributed articles.

CANADA LANCET
A Monthly Journal of Medical and Surgical Science.
v.3 - v.55:10, Toronto, September 1870 - June 1922, (v.54:10 [June 1921] never published.)
The volume numbering of Vols. 55 is particularly irregular and many issues are wrongly labeled v.56.
Editors: Vols. 3-5: John Fulton, Uzziel Ogden and J. Widmer Rolph
Vols. 6-19: Fulton
Vols. 20-27: John L. Davison and Charles Sheard
Vols. 28-29: Davison and George Perry Sylvester
Vol. 30: Davison and board of associate editors
Vol. 31: Sylvester
Vols. 32-34: H.B. Anderson and board of associate editors
Vols. 35-42: John Ferguson
Vols. 43-54: John Ferguson and W. Ewart Ferguson
Vol. 55: Editorial board
The Canada Lancet may be seen as an indirect contribution of John Rolph; Brock (See: Dominion
Medical Journal), Ogden, J.W, Rolph, and Fulton all studied under him. It was a useful medical
journal that somehow overcame the financial problems, which troubled so many periodicals,
although the business methods followed were identical to those of other journals, at least at first.
The editor: reported that "... The Canada Lancet will be sent to every medical man in the
Dominion, who is not already a subscriber, whose name we can obtain. A polite note will be
enclosed in each, with a form of application attached, and we trust that all those who have the
welfare of the profession at heart will do us the kindness to send their names" (v.3, p31).
Presumably the method succeeded, in this instance) because the journal was a good one.
When reading through the early volumes of The Canada Lancet one detects a change
that is probably representative not merely of the tastes of the editor: but also of the temper
of the profession. Although controversy continues: to abound, its expression is less shrill
and bad-tempered than had been the case in The Unfettered Canadian and even the
late issues of the Upper Canada Journal. Important issues remain to be resolved but
the level of argument has risen, at the expense of polemic. Thus in an editorial in 1879,
homœopathy is discussed not in terms of sectarian antipathy but rather in terms of the
proper distribution of representation on the Medical Council of Ontario (v.12, p.120),
Professionalization had advanced far in a generation.
John Fulton established his journal in a format that is strikingly modern in its division
into a section of original articles, a wide-ranging editorial section, vigorous letters-to-the-editor,
book reviews, and notices of work published outside Canada. He was able to attract
original articles of unusual quality for the time. In the potentially risky area of published
correspondence he showed great skill in permitting considerable latitude while usually
avoiding bitterness. In decisions on editorial matters he adopted a firm policy without
obvious bias toward any of the three Toronto medical schools. Irregular practitioners
and their efforts to enlarge their influence did, however, continue to be a frequent
source of pointed comment.
At several times in its history the publisher had problems with volume and issue numbering and according to a publisher’s note in the August 1921 issue, Vol 54/55 #10 (June 1921) was never published “due to a printers’ strike in Toronto”; there is continuous pagination between #9 and #11.

Published monthly with two volumes per year.
Editors: Editorial board
"As another new year dawns we hail our readers with a journal under a new name - a union
of the two oldest medical journals in Canada (sic) - The Canada Lancet and The Canadian
Practitioner. The Canada Lancet was established in 1866 (sic), (The Dominion
Medical Journal, the short-lived predecessor of the Canada Lancet, was actually
founded in 1868) and The Canadian Practitioner has carried on continuous publication
since 1875. To these now say, 'Vale'. Commencing with this issue, the combined journal
will appear as THE CANADA LANCET AND PRACTITIONER. "These journals
have existed side by side for the past half century, their relations having always been
most cordial. In one sense they have represented the two fine old Medical Schools,
which, situated as they were, near the old General Hospital, which is now but a
memory, did so much 'spade work' in the medical education in this Province - Trinity
Medical and the old Toronto School of Medicine, which institutions, like these
journals, happily themselves became amalgamated a few years ago" (v.64, p.1).

In 1872, when George Fenwick and Francis Wayland Campbell, the Editors of the Canada Medical Journal and Monthly Record of Medical and Surgical Science, agreed to separate on account of personal differences, Fenwick continued the journal
under the above title and Campbell founded the Canada Medical Record. To an
extent the journals represent the two English-language medical faculties in
Montreal at the time, McGill's and Bishop’s.

CANADA MEDICAL JOURNAL AND MONTHLY RECORD OF MEDICAL AND SURGICAL SCIENCE (1852)
v.1:1-12, Montreal, March 1852 - February 1853.
Editors: Robert L. MacDonnell and Aaron H. David
"The Canada Medical Journal will be the scientific organ of the profession generally,
without reference to parties, schools, or colleges; and, consequently, the Editors have
decided upon avoiding all subjects of a mere party character, whilst they freely open their
pages to those who may wish to discuss these matters, provided their communications be
authenticated with the signatures of the writers, and be couched in temperate and becoming
language. The Editors... must remind their readers that the British American Journal was
discontinued because its subscribers did not fulfill their part of the contract, by regularly
and promptly remitting their subscriptions.... " (Vol.1, 59-60). "We will go on with
the 'Canada Medical Journal' if you pay your subscriptions before the 1st of next
April - if you do not the Journal must cease". (Vol. 1, p.762). This appeal was
unavailing and the journal ceased publication.
MacDermot notes that "This journal immediately followed Hall's first attempt with the British American Journal, indeed he proposed that the others should take over his publication as it stood. But Macdonnell, who had assisted Hall in his editorship for a year, preferred to begin another journal, although he knew quite well that Hall failed because subscribers would not pay up. But at least he learned his lesson sooner than Hall did. At the end of one year, finding subscriptions in arrears, he promptly suspended operations."

CANADA MEDICAL JOURNAL AND MONTHLY RECORD OF MEDICAL AND SURGICAL SCIENCE (1864)
v.1 - v.8, Montreal, Dawson Brothers, July 1864 - June 1872.
Editors: George E. Fenwick and Francis Wayland Campbell
Corresponding Editors: Vols. 6 - 8: D. McNeill Parker, Halifax; W. Canniff;
Toronto and William Bayard; St. John, N.B.
The journal appropriated an earlier title (above) with the permission of A.H. David (David A.H. Reminiscences connected with the medical profession in Montreal during the last fifty years. Canada Medical Record. V.11:1 Oct 1882 p 1-8.
This was quite a good
publication containing much original material, although almost exclusively case
reports. Yet the editors return again and again in the editorial pages to two common
themes: insufficient numbers of paid-up subscribers and inadequate supply of material
submitted for publication. More than one issue was published late because there were
not enough contributions available to fill the pages. Dunning, cajoling editorials request
those physicians who have been receiving the journal free to pay the subscription fee. In 19th. century Canada, the publishers usually began by sending a journal without
charge to every member of the profession they could identify, asking each physician
either to pay a subscription fee or to return the journal.
Ultimately, the journal ceased
publication because of "personal differences between the editors. The publishers of
the Canada Medical Journal (Dawson Brothers) considered it advisable to stand
aloof from all party feeling; they, therefore, intimated to the Editors their determination
to stop the publication, leaving them to resuscitate a new work or works, which
will stand or fall by their own merits" (v.8, p.571).

Vols. 17-23: A. Lapthorn Smith
Vols. 24-27: John B. McConnell
Vols. 28-32: Francis Wayland Campbell
This journal started publication, together with the Canada Medical and Surgical Journal, from the Canada Medical
Journal and Monthly Record of Medical and Surgical Science.
"The causes which have contributed to our demise is (sic) the old one - want of money - and
perhaps another to which we will only refer. The Editor has done for years his level best to
get the RECORD out on time-but unsuccessfully - still it is not creditable to the medical
profession - certainly not to our subscribers - that out of about one thousand on our list,
not fifty paid the paltry annual fee of one dollar. Yet, perhaps, after all, there are plenty
of medical journals in Canada." In the minutes of the Bishop's Medical Faculty of September 8, 1904 Campbell proposed that the journal cease publication because the journal 'had fallen much behind in its payments and the printer [Lovell] had refused to publish the journal in the future.''
MacDermot reports that William Henry Drummond - a faculty member of the Bishop's medical faculty - assisted with the editing in 1895.
Campbell founded and edited the Canada Medical Record and used the journal to promote the Bishop’s College medical faculty, which he was instrumental in founding and of which he was dean from 1882 to 1905. (In 1905, shortly after the journal ceased, Bishop's medical faculty was merged into McGill's and Campbell died.)

National Hygiene and Public Welfare. This last note raises a question because the latter journal
was combined with the Canada Lancet in 1922 to become the Canada Lancet and National
Hygiene, which in turn became The Canada Lancet and Practitioner in 1925 - a journal that
still existed when Canadian Health was created in 1930. Even more confusingly, Health (Toronto) had the cover title "Canadian Health" from 1933-1935.

Sometimes called Canadian Practitioner and Medical Review
MacDermot notes that the "melange of titles" drew a protest from Osler, "who, busy as he was in Baltimore, still kept an eye on the Canadian journals. 'Why, in Minerva's name,' Osler wrote ' can you not fuse the two journals without adding to the title? It is shocking aggravation to libraries to change their cards etc. Moreover, it spoils the set and is a general worry to everyone. Why should not the [Canadian] Medical Review, which is the junior journal, die peacefully and quietly? Journals die daily and nobody minds, so long as the Editor (if he is a good fellow) does not die with it. Do think the matter over and on the first of January let the Practitioner appear as vol xxv, with its old name. Then, remember Mr Editor, this will not be a first offence, The Practitioner was formerly the Canadian Journal of Medical Science, started by dear old friend 'Dic' Zimmermann. Would you add sin to sin? Do, Mr. Editors, I appeal to you both, talk the matter over (after dinner) like sensible fellows, and adopt the plan best adapted to the interests of the profession and to medical journalism - take the Editor of the Review (and make him work hard) but drop the name. Very truely yours, Wm Osler (a reader of twenty-four years.)' It was 22 years before the Editors adopted Osler's suggestion!
