To assist users wanting to locate copies of the listed titles or see if there are digitised versions available, there are 'hot links' from the titles to all that are listed in WorldCat. WorldCat often has duplicate entries and the most 'popular' entry has usually been linked to.

Canadiana is trying to digitise all Canadian journals published prior to 1921 and all Canadiana content is now freely available. A link has been created for any titles that have been digitised (in full or in part) by Canadiana

Information and links have also been added about other free e-versions if these are almost complete and appear to have stable URLs.

QUEBEC MEDICAL JOURNAL
JOURNAL DE MEDECINE DE QUEBEC
v.1 - v.2, Quebec, François Lemaitre, January 1826 - October 1827.
Quarterly (Vol. 2:3 and 4 were issued together).
Editor: F. Xavier Tessier
The Quebec Medical Journal was Canada's first medical periodical, and despite its relatively brief existence, it provides a wealth of important historical material. Volume one has title pages in both French and English and the work as a whole contains an approximately equal mixture of the two languages, the same subject matter never appearing in both, A partial alphabetical list of subscribers (from "Amiot" to "McDonald") printed at the end of Vol. 1:3 [this list is not reproduced by Canadiana and was probably NOT part of the volume] lists seventy-one names, of which twenty-three are physicians, two medical students, nineteen lawyers, six merchants, four clergy, and the rest an assortment of tradesmen. Most lived in the city of Quebec, although about a third were scattered through the rest of the province. Each issue of the journal was divided according to the Editor's original plan into three sections: A Critical Analysis of Current Medical Literature, A Quarterly Retrospect of Improvements in Medical Science, and Matières Domestiques. These sections tended to change somewhat from issue to issue according to the nature and quantity of material included. The "Critical Analysis" attempted to provide the Canadian reader with reviews of the most important new medical works throughout the world. In some cases, presumably where he had not been able to obtain the book itself, the Editor: simply reprinted a review from another journal. In other cases, however, important passages from the works themselves are reproduced along with Tessier's personal comments. Among the works reviewed during the two-year run of the periodical are B. Brodie, Pathological and Surgical Observations on the Diseases of the Joints, London, 1822; T.R. Beck, Elements of Medical Jurisprudence, London, 1825; and A. Bertrand, Du Magnétisme Animal en France..., Paris, 1826; all of which are important contemporary contributions by noted authorities. The notices included in the "Quarterly Retrospect" section are reports on new discoveries and interesting cases abstracted from a large number of the leading foreign medical periodicals. These include the Lancet (London), the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal, the Journal de Magendie (Paris), Hufelands Journal (Berlin) and the North American Medical and Surgical Journal (Philadelphia). Some of these items seem curiously remote (e.g. an article on "Temperamens" which attempts to mix Galenic humours with nineteenth century physiology) while many others, such as a report on a successful blood transfusion or the use of digitalis in dropsy, have a decidedly modern turn. Among the "Matières Domestiques," to which the Editor promises his special attention, much interesting material on the state of health and medicine in early nineteenth century Canada is to be found. Each issue contains a complete daily meteorological record for Montreal and Quebec including the following details: temperature at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.; barometric reading at 7 a.m. and 3p.m.; and atmospheric condition. This section also reproduces many hospital reports giving statistics on such matters as their patients' diseases, recoveries, and deaths, and occasional detailed case histories.
The reports cover the Montreal General Hospital from January 1825 until January 1826, the Quebec Emigrant Hospital from June to December 1825, and the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec for the year 1826. Each issue also features a "Report on the State of Public Health During the Past Season" for Quebec, written by the Editor. This report notes meteorological trends, general morbidity and mortality and the prevalence of specific diseases, and describes interesting cases. One cannot but be reminded of the Hippocratic "Epidemics", which may well have served as Tessier's model. An insight into the social life of the profession in Quebec at the time can be gleaned from many chance remarks, and from longer articles on such topics as charlatanism, the Quebec Medical Society (which was formed on 4 December 1826,and of which Tessier was secretary), an honorary dinner held for a colleague (Pierre de Sales Laterrière) who was travelling to France, the necessity of a new General Hospital in Quebec, and medical instruction then available in Montreal and Quebec. MacDermot notes that there is no hint as to why this publication ceased but he suggests that Tessier's health may have been failing as he died, of tuberculosis, a few years later.
In 1974 Osiris Publications, Montreal, reprinted both volumes of the Quebec Medical Journal / Journal de medécine de Québec.

UNFETTERED CANADIAN
 v.1:1-4, Brockville ON, v. 1:5-12, Toronto, January 1849 - December 1850. (Suspended Sept. 1849 - Aug. 1850)
Monthly.
Editor: Robert Dick.
The first medical periodical published in Ontario appears to have been the Unfettered Canadian, a fascinating instance of polemic. It was issued as the Organ of quasi-Thomsonian eclectic practitioners fighting against a bill that they believed would prohibit their practice - as undoubtedly it was meant to do. The Editor, the Reverend Robert Dick, infused his journal with outspoken vigour. Consider, for example, this brief excerpt from his introduction and Prospectus: "Can you believe it, Freemen of Canada! that a portion of our M.D.'s embodying the selfishness and arrogance of the sect, are labouring indefatigably to urge through the present House of Parliament, a bill of such appalling atrocity, as to subject you, and me, and each one of us, to a fine of Five Pounds for every day on which we may be found administering the most simple medical relief to a suffering friend?!!!" (Vol.1:1). It bore the 'slogan" "Medical Reform, Asserting the Rights, and Duty of Every Man, to Investigate and Choose for Himself, In Relation to the Philosophy and Means of Health."

UPPER CANADA JOURNAL OF MEDICAL, SURGICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE
v.1 - v.3, Toronto, A.F. Plees, April 1851 - September 1854.
Monthly.
Editors: Vol. 1-2; Edward M. Hodder, John King, James Bovell, Lucius O'Brien, and Henry Melville
Vol.3: Samuel John Stratford
The initiating group of editors noted some of the fiscal hazards of medical journalism in an editorial in the second issue of their publication: "We would here remark, that, as far as the projectors of the journal are concerned, they have but one object in view - the general benefit of the profession, and if they can promote this, even at a small pecuniary sacrifice, they will be content. The idea of profit or emolument being derived by them from the publication, is at once put to rest by the nature of their contract with the publisher, which secures to him free editing, all the profits - should such occur - and half the loss, if any be sustained" (Vol. 1 p.65).
We do not know the financial history of this periodical, but the original proprietors gave it up after two years and a new editor, Stratford, attempted to carry on. Interestingly, Volume 2 has two sets of pagination, one for the pages 1-286, and then a further set for the March issue (pages 1-228); were the first set of editors trying to publish all the material they had received before passing the title to Stratford, the new Editor?
Whereas the journal initially contained interesting case reports by several physicians of Upper Canada and lengthy resumes about medical legislation, after Stratford took over the editorship with Volume 3 (number 1 of which is dated simply "1853" and number 2 "November 1853"), he became embroiled in controversy. For example, there was a prolonged dispute with William Rawlings Beaumont, and the editor himself provided a substantial proportion of the published material - usually a reliable sign of impending journalistic disaster. MacDermot notes that this was "An excellent publication, full of good material. But Stratford was not the right man to carry it on."

WESTERN CANADA MEDICAL JOURNAL

v.1 - v.9, Winnipeg, January 1907 - December 1915.
Monthly.
Editor: George Osborne Hughes (first identified as Editor-in-Chief at v.1 p.369).
Harry Morrell - Managing Editor.
When founding this Journal, the editors first wrote to the members of the profession of Western Canada; "Our circular letter was sent to the medical men from the Great Lakes to Victoria. We found it was not just at Winnipeg, or at Calgary, or at Vancouver, or at Victoria that the need was felt, but all through the West" (Vol. 1, p.26). The journal began with the advantage of an introductory essay by William Osler entitled, "Note on the Use of a Medical Journal," but despite this auspicious sign it achieved no special distinction and ultimately collapsed during World War 1.
