Last updated 20 December 2020

To assist users wanting to locate copies of the listed titles or see if there are digitised versions available, there are 'hot links' from the titles to all that are listed in WorldCat. WorldCat often has duplicate entries and the most 'popular' entry has usually been linked to.

Canadiana is trying to digitise all Canadian journals published prior to 1921 and all Canadiana content is now freely available. A link has been created for any titles that have been digitised (in full or in part) by Canadiana

Information and links have also been added about other free e-versions if these are almost complete and appear to have stable URLs.

JOURNAL OF THE TIMES
v.1 - v.2, Halifax NS, MacAllister and Paine, September 1858 - May/June 1860
The first, or the second if one counts the Family Dentist, dental journal published in Canada. Gullett does not consider this to be a "real" dental journal and states, p 48, that "The Journal of the Times was a letterhead-size four-page quarterly, of which seven issues were published. ...only the first page was devoted to dental subjects. The other pages contained a miscellany of short items and verses of a general nature, extracted from various publications and dealing with subjects from philosophy to odd news events, interspersed with statements respecting the dental practice of MacAllister and Paine of a advertising nature."

MANITOBA, NORTHWEST AND BRITISH COLUMBIA LANCET
v.1 - v.2, Winnipeg, July/August 1887 - June 1889.
Monthly, sometimes irregular.
Editor: John Pyne Pennefather
"In placing this, the first issue of the MANITOBA, NORTHWEST AND BRITISH COLUMBIA LANCET, before the profession, I feel that a want has been supplied. The fast-increasing numbers of medical men settled and settling in the vast area comprised under the above heading, the rapidly growing importance of the respective provinces and the formation of colleges and schools, with the establishment of hospitals of no mean capacity, all intimated that the time had arrived which demanded in the interests of the profession a representative organ. The medical profession united is a powerful body, and the girdle which binds them is their special journals" (Vol. 1:1 page 3.)

MEDICAL CHRONICLE
Montreal Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery
v.1 - v.6, Montreal, Moore, Owler and Stevenson, June 1853 - May 1859.
Editors: William Wright and Duncan Campbell MacCallum
Even in the first year of its existence, the Medical Chronicle (the sub-title only survived for Vol 1:1) contained a good supply of clinical material, a substantial portion of it coming from authors practicing in Canada West. That year, 1853, was the last year of publication of the Upper Canada Journal of Medical, Surgical and Physical Science, which was then being edited by the contentious S.J. Stratford. After his journal expired, the Medical Chronicle was the only medical journal being published anywhere in Canada. MacDermot notes that in volume 6, page 559, the editors announce that "The reasons which have determined the publishers in stopping, or at least suspending for the moment, of the Chronicle, are various. One of the principal, we may mention to our readers, is the advent of the new Postal Law, which imposes the sum of Two Pence on each number of the Journal sent through the Post Office. This, if paid by the Proprietors, would make the Journal with its present subscription list a losing enterprise. From the first year of its issue up to the termination of last year, it has merely paid expenses, no profit whatever accruing to either the present or former proprietors. A large sum is now due to Messrs. Dawson and Son for the past year, and much will depend upon the promptitude with which these subscriptions are paid as to whether or not they will re-assume the responsibilities of publishing a Medical Journal."

MEDICAL CRITICISM
No. 1 (Sept. 2, 1882)] - 2nd ser. no. 12 (Mar. 31, 1883).
Editor: David Edwards
This title is not really a 'medical" journal as it was edited by a layperson and dealt with topical medical subjects, such as vaccination, from a lay perspective. It does however give an interesting perspective on the public perception of physicians.

MEDICAL TIMES
A Weekly Journal of Medical Science, News, and Politics.
v.1:1 - 26, Kingston ON, J. Nash, July 5 - December 27, 1873.
Editor: James Neish
The Editor's previous work as sub-editor during 1862 to the Kingston Daily News is reflected in this short-lived journal. The publication, Canada's first weekly medical journal, contained almost nothing that was either original or memorable, with the notable exception of the editorials. Neish was an able editorialist who was well read on the medical-political issues of the day and who expressed himself effectively. On this basis alone the modern historian may find a study of the journal profitable. MacDermot notes "The first attempt at a medical weekly in Canada was not a good one. Dr Neish complained that he did not receive enough encouragement from the profession but his paper really contained nothing to attract anyone."

MONTREAL MEDICAL GAZETTE
GAZETTE MÉDICALE DE MONTRÉAL (1844)
Being a Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Collateral Sciences.
v.1 - v.2:2, Montreal, Lovell and Gibson, April 1844 - May 1845.
Editors: Francis Badgley and William Sutherland
At the time they founded The Montreal Medical Gazette, Badgley and Sutherland were outside the medical establishment of Montreal, having been excluded from McGill. They joined the group that founded the rival Montreal School of Medicine and Surgery in 1843. In their journal, the second medical journal published in Canada (the first being the Quebec Medical Journal), the Editors laid editorial siege to McGill and other contemporary instances of what they believed to be chauvinistic and discriminatory institutions. Before the journal itself appeared, the editors produced a sample issue, a "feeler," in which articles appeared concurrently in English and in French. This publication is not numbered as part of the Gazette and we have found only one instance in which it is bound with the journal - in the collection of the Osler Library of McGill University. An unbound copy existed in the, now closed, William Boyd Collection of the Academy of Medicine, Toronto. Confusingly, this trial issue is identified as being vol. 1, no. 1 of The Montreal Medical Gazette (dated March 1, 1844). This journal therefore has the unusual distinction of possessing two "first" numbers, issued a month apart. The [specimen no.] is the only issue to have its complete text in both English and French; other issues include some text in French.

The clinical papers that appeared in the thirteen issues of the journal are good by the standards of the time; they were contributed almost entirely by physicians of Canada East who were not affiliated with McGill University. Notable are contributions by James Crawford providing comparative statistics on illness among soldiers on several stations, including Canada (p. 33), and by A.H. Skene on the Commission charged to study leprosy at Tracadie (p. 79). A running battle between Wolfred Nelson and Andrew Fernando. Holmes over the question of whether one Julien Champeau did or did not have acute peritonitis when he died is the most lengthy example of a series of controversial items that found vigorous and outspoken expression through the pages of this short-lived journal. The Dictionary of Canadian Biography note "Dr Badgley ... loved controversies and contributed his share to those current in hospital and university circles. In his editorials he campaigned against those in charge of McGill University and the Montreal General Hospital, and against the Montreal Board of Medical Examiners, since in his opinion they all gave proof of chauvinism and discrimination.

MONTREAL TRACTS ON HOMOEOPATHY
Nos. 1-7, Montreal, W. Drysdale & Co. 1884-1890.
This publication is more a series of short monographs than a real journal: the numbers appear to have continuous pagination. It was aimed, at least partly, at the public. "In this country the only man who seems to see the advantage of making the people practically acquainted with the benefits of the system [homoeopathy] is Dr Nichol of Montreal." (The Physicians and Surgeons Investigator, 1889, v. 10, p. 29.)
Editor: Thomas Nichol
#1. Diphtheria and its management (1884)
#2 Smallpox and its prevention (1885)
#3 The test of homoeopathy (1886)
#4 Croup and its management (1887)
#5 The misrepresentations of homœopathy (1888)
#6 Congestion of the lungs and its dangers (1889)
#7 Hahnemann, the discoverer of homoeopathy (This numner was planned but may never have been published (and no copies have been located in 2020) as Nichol died in early 1890: "this year he proposed celebrating the centenary of homoeopathy by a tract on Hahnemann, the Discoverer of Homoeopathy" (From: Nichol's obituary in New England Medical Gazette, 1890, August v. 25: pp 382-384).
Some numbers are available on Canadiana.ca as separate items.
